Laser-Directed Root Canals

What is Laser Assisted Root Canal Therapy?

Laser-assisted root canal therapy is an advanced dental procedure that uses laser technology to enhance traditional root canal treatment. Specifically, the Er,Cr:YSGG laser, operating at a wavelength of 2,780 nm, induces cavitation—tiny bubbles forming in fluid—that creates rapid fluid movement and secondary cavitation effects, generating negative apical pressure. These photoacoustic waves thoroughly clean and disinfect the deepest layers inside infected tooth canals, effectively eliminating up to 99% of bacteria, fungi, and viruses found in biofilms.

What is the advantage of using a laser for root canal therapy?

  • Minimally invasive tooth structure
  • Maximally cleans and disinfects the root canal system
  • Enables sterilization of the tooth
  • More successful outcomes of root canal therapy
  • Less post-operative pain after root canal treatment
  • Achieves profound anesthesia during root canal treatment
  • Formation of hard tissue including bone and dentin

Is it safe?

Biolase is safe and effective. First approved for use in 1998, biolase is now used by endodontists worldwide to deliver accurate, comfortable root canal treatments that meet the needs of patients of all ages.
